Considerations for Manager

Organizations face an uphill task in which employees to promote to a managerial position. According to chapter 2, for a technical communication employee to be promoted to a manager, they first of all have to be performers in the organization. The quality of their output has to stand out as compared to their counterparts. They also have to be skilled. This is because the profession is skill-proficiency based.

Another consideration is how long the person has worked in the organization. This is also referred to as their seniority. Technical communication employees who have been in the organization for longer should be given first priorities in consideration for managerial positions. Lastly is the level of education more educated employees should be promoted.

This description resonates with my experience to some extent. In the few years I have been working in various organizations, I have seen them use seniority, skills education, as well as performance. Each of these is given some different weight from the other. Performance has always been the number one consideration.

Performers have always been promoted to managerial positions. Education is the second in the hierarchy. Communication skills are given the third place, followed by the attitude, integrity, and personality. Seniority has always taken a lesser weight even though it proves the subjects loyalty to the organization. This is where the description in chapter 2 differs from my experience.

In my management philosophy, not all the aspects in the first part of chapter 2 are useful. According to me, performance is very essential. The quality as well as quantity of output is always an important aspect when promoting a manager. The education levels and skills too are useful. Seniority however is not that useful (Bakker 6).
