Initiating Good Communication
To establish better cultural competence communication with Mr. Pierre, the nurse would have introduced herself to him and his son. This would have helped create a better rapport with them, thus making them feel welcomed and comfortable while on the premises. The nurse would have asked whether the patient had any questions or concerns about his appointment (Almutairi et al., 2017). Additionally, on being informed about Mr. Pierre’s inability to communicate in English, the nurse would have allowed Mr. Pierre’s son to translate for him.

Pierre Cultural Competence Case Study: Stereotypes in the clip
The first bias in the clip was the assumption that Mr. Pierre was African American due to his skin color. This error was not a careless mistake made by the nurse on site but had been in Mr. Pierre’s medical records. Such a stereotype would have severe consequences as such information may inform Mr. Pierre’s diagnosis or treatment plan. Another stereotype evident in the clip is when Betty denied Mr. Pierre from getting a home cooked meal due to Haitian food’s aroma, without having any dietary restrictions (Baptisthealthsf & MECCAakaGRIMO, 2019). Such bias would interfere with the patients’ comfort and consequently their recovery.
Pierre Cultural Competence Case Study: Evidence of ethnocentrism
The assumption that Mr. Pierre was African American due to his skin color is one of the most conspicuous pieces of evidence of ethnocentrism in the video clip. This assumption was erroneous as he was Haitian. RN Betty, too, denied Mr. Pierre permission to get a home-cooked meal due to her dislike for Creolean food (Almutairi et al., 2017). RN Betty also assumed that the patient’s constant pain complaints were due to the sourpuss attitude in the Haitian culture.
Assimilation and acculturation
Assimilation of Haitian people into the American culture helps evidently in the video clip, as the staff assumes that Mr. Pierre can communicate in English. He is therefore obliged to learn the English language if he frequents the Baptist Health setting. Mr. Pierre is also learning the English language as he understood and responded to “See you” as sentiment made the nurse biding him goodbye (Baptisthealthsf & MECCAakaGRIMO, 2019).
